Our Story
Our History
We are thankful that God has gathered many of the nations of the world
at Immanuel and together we are being transformed into his likeness as
we share the life-giving message of Jesus Christ and grow deeper in his
love.
1866
Originally called Alexander Street Baptist Church, it had 27 members at the time.
1888
Moved to a new location at the corner of Jarvis and Wellesley. The name was changed to Immanuel Baptist Church.
1948
Sunday School was closed for a period of time because of the polio epidemic.
1967
As people were moving to the suburbs, the decision was made to relocate and build on the current site, merging with the nearby church, Pleasant View Church. At this point the congregation was mono-ethnic (Anglo).
1974
There was an intentional ministry focused on multiculturalism, for the church to reflect the community and the result is the diversity that is visible today.
1981
The church moved to blended worship with traditional and contemporary music.
An expansion was built on to the building.
1987
Camp programs “Kids Company” and “Camp on the Rock” were formed.
1989
Church structure changed from a separate Board of Deacons and Board of
Management to merge into one Council.
1994
The church had its first female associate pastor.
2016
Celebrated 150 years of service.
2018
First sermon posted on YouTube.
2020
Church closed for worship and went virtual because of the Corona virus called COVID-19.
